About Dr. Yohana

Born at a Border Crossing. Built for Leadership.

The story of a refugee child who became a freedom architect for leaders worldwide.

Community in Nakivale

Where it all began

I was born in 1973 at a border clinic between Rwanda and Uganda, as my parents fled anti-Tutsi violence. I entered the world literally between two countries — and for the next 27 years, I would not belong to either.

My childhood was shaped by displacement. My family lived in Nshungerezi camp until it was burned around 1978–79. We returned to Rwanda, but stability was short-lived. I lost my mother around age nine or ten. Then the 1990–94 war came, and I fled through Akagera toward Uganda — into years in refugee settlements, including Nakivale, one of the oldest refugee camps in Africa.

Across 27 years and five separations from place, safety, and certainty, I lived the reality of displacement — no stable school, no clear path forward.

But someone chose to invest in me. A missionary named Pat paid my elementary school fees. That single act of belief — one person deciding my life was worth investing in — changed everything.

Education opened a door I didn't know existed. It gave me language, confidence, vision, and eventually a path to North America — not to forget where I came from, but to return with purpose.

The journey from survival to significance

After resettling in North America, I joined the United States Navy — trading one form of service for another. The military taught me discipline, systems thinking, and the power of leading under pressure.

I pursued education relentlessly — earning my Doctor of Leadership in Global Perspective with a focus on trauma-informed leadership and post-traumatic growth, becoming a Maxwell Leadership Certified Coach and Trainer in 2018, and eventually rising to Executive Director within the Maxwell organization.

Along the way, I became a Lead Pastor at Christ Embassy Church Phoenix and a Clinical Correctional Chaplain serving incarcerated women at ASPC Perryville.

Every chapter of my life prepared me for one mission: helping others make the same journey from surviving their story to leading with it.

My Philosophy

Leaders are not born in comfort. They are forged in the fire of adversity.

I don't teach leadership from a textbook. I teach it from a refugee settlement in Uganda, from the deck of a Navy ship, from a prison chapel, and from the pulpit of a church plant that started with nothing but faith.

My frameworks — the GPS Leadership Model and the RICH Methodology — synthesize the best of situational leadership, cognitive behavioral coaching, identity-based change, and positive psychology. But they're grounded in something no framework can teach: lived experience.

That's what makes this different. I'm not observing the journey. I've walked it.
